The short version
recora (getrecora.app) is a screen recorder and video editor that runs entirely in your browser. Your recordings, edits, project files, and settings are created and stored locally on your device and are never uploaded to our servers. We can't see, access, or recover your videos.
The only personal data we ever process is the minimum needed to sell and validate a recora Pro license, and that is handled by our payments provider, Polar.
Who we are
In this policy, "recora", "we", "us", and "our" refer to the team operating recora. "You" refers to anyone who uses the app. If you have questions about this policy, contact us at support@getrecora.app.
Data that stays on your device
Because recora is local-first, the following never leaves your browser unless you deliberately export or download it:
- Recordings & media — screen, webcam, and microphone captures.
- Projects & edits — timeline segments, zoom waypoints, backgrounds, captions, and other editing data, stored in your browser's IndexedDB.
- App settings & preferences — including your theme choice and the ID of your current project, stored in localStorage.
This data is processed entirely on-device. We have no server-side copy of it and no way to access it. Clearing your browser storage or deleting a project removes it permanently.
Data we process for recora Pro
recora is free to use. If you upgrade to recora Pro, payment and subscription management are handled by Polar, who acts as the merchant of record for the transaction.
What Polar collects
When you purchase Pro, Polar collects the information needed to process the payment — for example your email address and billing/payment details. This is governed by Polar's privacy policy. We do not receive or store your full payment card details.
What we receive
To grant and verify Pro access, we receive limited purchase metadata from Polar, such as your license key, subscription status, and related order/customer identifiers. We use this solely to enable Pro features for you. Your subscription status is verified on demand by checking your license key against Polar's licensing API.
License validation
Your recora Pro license keyis stored locally in your browser. When you activate, validate, or deactivate a license, your license key and a per-device activation identifier are sent to Polar's licensing API to confirm the license is valid and to manage how many devices it is active on.
Analytics
To understand how recora is used and improve it, we use Vercel Web Analytics, a cookieless and privacy-friendly analytics service. It does not set tracking cookies, does not use any persistent identifier, and does not track you across other websites.
It collects only aggregated, anonymous information about site traffic — such as the page visited, referrer, approximate country, and general device, browser, and operating-system type. This data cannot be used to identify you personally and is processed in accordance with Vercel's privacy policy.
Cookies & local storage
recora does not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. We rely on your browser's localStorage and IndexedDB purely to make the app work — storing your projects, preferences, and (if applicable) your license key on your device. Checkout pages hosted by Polar may set their own cookies as described in their policy.
How we share data
We do not sell your personal data. We share data only with service providers that make recora work:
- Polar — payments, subscription billing, and license validation.
- Vercel — hosting and cookieless web analytics for the recora web app.
- Our hosting provider — serves the recora web app and the small API endpoints used for licensing.
We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect our rights and the safety of our users.
Data retention
Local data (recordings, projects, settings, license key) is retained in your browser until you delete it or clear your browser storage. Purchase and subscription records are retained by Polar in line with their policies and applicable legal and accounting requirements.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the GDPR or CCPA — including the right to access, correct, or delete personal data, and to object to or restrict certain processing.
- For data held on your device, you are in full control: delete projects in-app or clear your browser storage at any time.
- For purchase data held by Polar, you can exercise your rights directly with Polar or by contacting us at support@getrecora.app and we will help facilitate the request.
Children's privacy
recora is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we'll revise the "Last updated" date above. Material changes will be communicated through the app or website.
